Profile

The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a four-year, senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and is one of the 11 senior colleges in CUNY. The College participates in doctoral programs of The City University Graduate School and University Center in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Nursing, Physics, and Psychology.

The Center for Engineered Polymeric Materials (CEPM) is a New York State funded (NYSTAR designated) College Applied Research and Technology Center at the College of Staten Island of the City University of NY. The Center is directed by Professors Nan-Loh Yang and Alan Lyons and is composed of polymer chemistry faculty, post-docs, graduate students and other experts from throughout CUNY. The Center is currently working in the areas of very high dielectric constant materials (e.g. ultracapacitors), multi-ferroic materials, nanoswitches, thermal management, mesoporous materials, superhydrophobic surfaces, alternative energy devices, polymeric materials used in energy storage, and general uses of polymers in engineered materials.

We offer the business community a powerful resource and partner for conducting innovative polymer research and development programs. Our goal is to provide the technology base to help companies become more competitive and expand their market opportunities.

We offer numerous targeted services including:

  • Industrial Interface – CEPM seeks joint project interactions that will bring innovative technology to industrial processes / products and solve particular manufacturing issues.
  • Networking – Events are conducted every year on or off campus that bring together students, faculty and industrial/governmental/academic professionals.
  • Education – The Center has sponsored short courses that are designed for students and the industrial professionals (e.g. polymerization technology)
  • Facility Resource Sharing – The Center offers access to state of the art analytical characterization and imaging instrumentation.
  • World Class Expertise / Consulting – CEPM has more than 12 faculty researchers in polymers, material science, chemistry, physics and engineering with laboratory support.
