It is hard to believe that it has been two years since we stood with the NY-BEST Board of Directors, State and local government officials, and leaders from the energy storage industry to cut the ribbon for the grand opening of the Battery and Energy Storage Technology Test and Commercialization Center (BTCC) at Eastman Business Park in Rochester, NY.
Recognizing that access to testing and characterization capabilities is a critical element for the advancement of battery and energy storage technologies, NY-BEST initiated a project in 2010 to establish a set of shared resources for the energy storage community. An Advisory Committee to the NY-BEST Board was created to assist NY-BEST in developing a plan for the creation of a commercialization center, State and private partners were secured, and on April 30, 2014, with the grand opening of the BEST Test and Commercialization Center, the first phase of the plan was realized.
The state-of-the art Center was funded through a public private partnership with New York State, NY-BEST and the Center’s operating partner, DNV GL , a global energy consultancy with deep expertise is testing and commercialization, . The Center’s services include a suite of test, validation and independent certification capabilities that are necessary to introduce new energy storage technologies into the marketplace. It includes testing equipment for battery testing of secondary cells and battery packs, as well as temperature test chambers and modular walk-in temperature test chambers. Offering testing from single cells to megawatt systems, the Center’s services include product development, performance validation and certification testing, and a wide range of environmental testing and battery lifetime testing.
Since its opening, the BEST Test and Commercialization Center has assisted dozens of companies to test and validate the performance of their products. The Center is a unique asset for the energy storage industry, providing the key elements necessary for product commercialization and growth in the energy storage industry. The Center’s services are helping to accelerate the adoption and growth of energy storage technologies establishing New York State as a leader in developing and manufacturing advanced energy storage solutions.
The two year anniversary is one of many milestones in store for the BTCC. As partnerships and technologies grow within New York State, the Center will as well.
Congratulations and thank you to all who have made the past two years possible. A special thank you to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Empire State Development, the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council and our operating partner, DNV GL, for your support in making the Center possible. We look forward to continuing the success of the Center with your involvement.
