Profile

RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE is the nation’s oldest technological university. The university offers degrees from five schools: Engineering; Science; Architecture; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; and the Lally School of Management & Technology; as well as an interdisciplinary degree in Information Technology. Driven by talented, dedicated, and forward-thinking faculty, Rensselaer has dramatically expanded the research enterprise by leveraging our existing strengths and focusing on five signature research areas: biotechnology; computation and information technology; experimental media and the arts; energy and the environment; and nanotechnology. The Institute is especially well-known for its success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace so that new discoveries and inventions benefit human life, protect the environment, and strengthen economic development. Rensselaer is home to one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI), and two New York State Centers for Advanced Technology working to advance the battery and energy storage sector in New York State. The Rensselaer Center for Future Energy Systems' (CFES) connects novel energy material research, knowledge, and technology in academia to the needs of the energy industry through technology transfer and/or collaborations that spur economic development. The Rensselaer Center for Automation Technologies and Systems (CATS) collaborates with commercial partners to conduct cutting-edge, industrially-relevant research in advanced manufacturing and automation/control systems, effectively bridging the 'laboratory-to-market' chasm across a wide range of application areas and industrial sectors. www.rpi.edu
