The University at Buffalo’s NYS Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI) leverages UB’s cutting-edge materials science and informatics expertise to drive innovation and critical R&D activities that directly impact private sector growth in several industries — including advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and energy. The CMI is dedicated to addressing industry’s materials science challenges through research and innovation by engaging entrepreneurial faculty, fostering a culture of innovation amongst students, and deploying the skills of UB researchers as well as those at partner institutions. UB and the CMI are uniquely positioned to play a leadership role in materials informatics on the national and international stages. UB has over fifty faculty members engaged in various aspects of materials research, with extensive funding from federal agencies and private industry. These scientists and engineers, along with the hundreds of graduate students and other researchers whom they mentor, are already working on exciting innovations with broad applications, from smart windows designed for energy efficiency to longer-lasting and safer medical implants, new materials and designs for less expensive more efficient solar cells, and futuristic shape-shifting and self-healing materials. The NYS Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics:  Advances innovation and state-of-the-art research in materials science, advanced manufacturing, and materials analytics  Develops breakthrough technologies and intellectual property  Accelerates new product development and serves as a “solutions” center to address pressing industry needs  Provides a community-based resource to grow manufacturing firms working in tandem with the new Buffalo Manufacturing Works operated by EWI  Facilitates start-ups and fosters entrepreneurship  Attracts federal, state, private, and philanthropic funding  Creates high-technology jobs in WNY  Facilitates industry-focused workforce development programs  Attracts companies to co-locate and re-locate  Drives public-private partnerships CMI’s vast array of materials science-related capabilities includes:  Materials design, discovery, and characterization  Materials synthesis and property measurement  Informatics platforms for enhanced data management and sharing of results among researchers  Interfacial design  Advanced metrologies  Materials processing and prototyping  Creation of material process-structure-property databases  Machine learning to identify new target materials. Together with UB’s Center for Advanced Biomedical and Bioengineering Technology (UB CAT) and the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CBLS), the CMI anchors UB’s technology-based economic development infrastructure, providing the platform whereby the university engages with New York State to develop and implement priority projects like the Buffalo Billion Investment Development Plan’s Buffalo Manufacturing Works, START-UP NY, and other large scale, public-private partnerships. The three NYSTAR-supported Centers bring critical and unique assets to the region in terms of both technologies and teams with scientific, business development, economic development, finance, and legal expertise. The CMI, in partnership with the CBLS and UB CAT, continues to contribute to developing the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Specifically, CMI has supported the Innovation Lecture Series, the Pre-Seed Workshop, and the Bright Buffalo Niagara Entrepreneur Expo, which featured five advanced manufacturing companies and 13 life sciences companies, and culminated in awarding $25K in cash prizes to the most promising startups.
