Applied Power Systems, based in Hicksville, New York, specializes in the design and manufacture of high-power electronic components, power controls and power systems. APS focuses primarily on high performance, high precision and high reliability power systems. The company’s products range from basic SCR and diode rectifier assemblies to complex power systems up to 4 MW including cryogenic magnet power supplies, high-voltage modulators, high-frequency inverters, and solid-state-power conversion products.
APS power products are used in a wide range of industries including oil and gas, motors and drives, distributed generation, alternative energy (solar, wind and wave power), transportation (rail, aerospace and marine), heavy industries, power transmission and distribution, and energy storage. Power electronics for energy conversion is a booming business area. The global inverter market is estimated to be over $50 billion and continues to grow being driven by such applications as electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and renewable energy.
As part of New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative, NYSERDA has made seven awards to New York-based companies to scale up or demonstrate innovative new approaches to energy storage. APS is a participant in two of these awards. One project is to develop multi-chemistry battery-chargers and low-voltage power supplies used in transportation applications. Under this program, APS seeks to improve the functionality and efficiency of its technology for transportation applications, including commuter rail lines.
Under a second project, APS is working with PowerHub Systems to develop a silicon-carbide-based power converter for energy storage systems that is expected to take up less space and store more power than comparable technologies.

APS works with and supplies technology to some of the most respected companies and laboratories around the world. These include leading laboratories such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Lab, Argonne National Laboratory, CERN, FermiLab, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, NASA and many others. Industrial customers include General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, Bechtel and General Atomics.
For the Knolls Lab, APS designed and built a four-megawatt motor drive for an experimental shipboard propulsion application. The unique requirements for this application required high precision bipolar DC output with extremely low distortion and a wide bandwidth. In 2012 APS delivered 5 large power assemblies to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics. Each system consisted of 12 inverters and contained custom controls and interfaces.
The APS facility includes fabrication, assembly, test and engineering development capacities for power semiconductor based products. Products are sold under the APS brand as well as major OEM brands under private label agreements. Development labs and production test departments are fully equipped with the latest generation test equipment required for power supply design, testing and support. APS maintains a comprehensive production facility that includes complete, fully equipped machining centers, an epoxy powder coating line, mechanical assembly cells, pcb assembly, electronic and power system assembly, test and laboratory areas, as well as raw material and finished goods storage areas. APS has been in operation for 20 years at its Long Island location.
